Wedding Entertainment Northamptonshire: Wedding DJ or Band?

Wedding entertainment Northamptonshire is high on the list of priorities for any wedding. Are you sitting on the fence and unsure of whether you’d like a wedding DJ or even a wedding band? Finding the right performer to provide you with the atmosphere that you’d like for your wedding is important.

But, where do you start? How do you find the perfect wedding entertainment in Northamptonshire for your big day? Start with a few key questions for you and your list of prospects to help with the process.

Questions to ask yourself about your Wedding Entertainment Northamptonshire:

1. What is my budget?

The downfall with live music at your wedding is that it is almost always going to cost more than a wedding DJ. This is usually because there are a lot more people and equipment involved with a band. You should carefully consider the budget that you have available for your wedding entertainment Northamptonshire.

If live music is a must have but it’s out of your price range, look around for a band that might play for part of your day. You could have them play the ceremony or over cocktails and then employ a wedding DJ for your reception and first dance.

2. What type of atmosphere do I want throughout my wedding day?

What type of wedding are you having? Is it a small gathering of close knit family and friends? Or, is it going to be a big blowout for everyone you know? If you have a lot of guests that you know will want to be on the dance floor, it’s important to ensure that you get the music right.

Bands usually specialise in one genre of music, or add their own style to different genres. Most weddings have a range of ages from young too old. It’s important that you cater for everyone and this is where a DJ comes into play. They can play anything that you like.

3. Does my venue have any restrictions?

Typically, bands take up quite a lot of space. All the equipment and instruments can take time to set up. It’s worth checking with the manager at your venue if you have the space to accommodate for a live band. If your venue is outside, there could also be restrictions on the amount of electricity available.

A DJ will often use up less space and electricity than a full live band, so take this into consideration before choosing your wedding entertainment Northamptonshire.

4. Should we make our own Wedding Playlist?

There are a lot of things to do when planning a wedding. Unless you’re extremely selective about what you’d like on your big day, most couples will choose to avoid the responsibility of having to choose all of their own music. It’s a big task and you’ll need at least 5 hours worth. That’s around 120 songs!

It could be tough to find a band that is well versed in 120 songs so a wedding DJ certainly feels like the better option at this stage.

5. Do I want my guests to be able to make requests?

Whether or not to allow your wedding entertainment to take requests is another consideration to make. You could end up with songs being played that you don’t like. It’s worth asking your prospect list how they handle requests and what they’d say to your guests if you decide that you’d prefer not to have any requests.

With all of these questions considered, it’s now time to think about what to ask your potential wedding entertainers.

Questions to ask your prospective Wedding Entertainment:

1. Are you available on my wedding date?

This question is all important. Wedding DJs and bands can be booked up 6 months in advance sometimes. You should start researching your wedding entertainment as early as possible when planning your wedding day.

2. How much do you charge for the amount of time I need you?

Now that you’ve spent time considering what you need to get out of your wedding entertainment, it’s time to find out how much they charge for the time you need them for. Most bands will cost upward of £1000 for a wedding reception and even more for the whole day. Wedding DJs are considerably less.

As a wedding DJ myself, I quote accordingly to ensure that I provide the most cost effective service for what you’ll want on your day.

3. How much is overtime and will you be available to stay late if we need you?

This is a really important question. You might only book your entertainment until a certain time. But, what if your guests aren’t quite ready to go home, you might not want to stop the party.

It’s always best to prepare for all outcomes. Ask in advance how much your wedding entertainment would charge for extra time and also, if they’re free. They might not be able to stay later so always ask in advance to avoid any unexpected disappointment.

4. Do you know/have the songs that I want to be played?

The most important song of your big day is your first dance. You wouldn’t want to find out at the last minute that your wedding entertainment can’t play the song that you’ve chosen either because the band haven’t practiced or the DJ doesn’t own it.

This is a must-ask question when it comes to vetting your prospects.

5. Have you got any reviews or references that we can see?

It’s important to get an understanding of how other customers of your prospects viewed them on their big days. This way you can get an unbiased opinion on how they perform. You do, after all, want your wedding day to be perfect.

6. Do you accept must-play / do not play lists?

Most of us have songs or genres that we simply don’t like and songs that we absolutely love. It’s good to know if your wedding DJ will accept lists of what to play and what not to play alongside their own flair.

The last thing you want is to be listening to music that you don’t like on your wedding day.

7. How will you decorate your performance area? What will you wear?

If you’re having a themed wedding or a casual wedding you’d ideally like your wedding entertainment to be in-line with everything else. You wouldn’t want all your planning to go to waste if your entertainment looks out of place. Ask what they’d wear and if they’d be open to keeping their style in-line with your own! (As long as it’s reasonable, of course).

You’re ready to book!

Now that you’ve spent time considering what you want and asking the right questions you should be able to whittle down what wedding entertainment you’d like to book. Choosing the perfect act for your big day is a huge part of your planning and it’s a big commitment so make sure you’re completely happy before you sign anything.

Being a wedding DJ myself, I will always cover these questions with you but if there are any other questions that you have, I’m always happy to answer them. Simply contact me today

What should you ask when booking a wedding DJ?

Before you make a booking...

Your wedding day is one of the most important days in your life. You want your guests to enjoy the party, young and old. Your wedding DJ has a very important role to play. Making sure that your soundtrack for the day sets the tone that you want will make all the difference.Asking these questions will help you whittle down the candidates and find the perfect Wedding DJ for your perfect day.First things first:

1. Are you available on my date?

The last thing you want is to have your heart set on a DJ for your wedding but they can’t play on your date. Always ask if they’re available on your date, first.

2. How long have you been a professional Wedding DJ?

This might be obvious, or not. But, make sure you’re not potentially hiring someone with no experience or who just DJ’s on the side. The advantage of hiring a seasoned professional wedding DJ, is we’ve done this all before. We’re experienced in ensuring smooth running and that the music you want to hear gets your guests up and dancing.

3. How many weddings do you do on an average weekend?

I bet you’re thinking, “Why does this matter to me?”. Well, it does. You want your DJ to be on their top performance game for your big day. Working with someone who has worked themselves too hard may just bite you on the bottom.

4. Have you performed at my chosen venue?

This shouldn’t necessarily be a dealbreaker. But, it can make your life easier on the day. If a DJ has performed at your venue before, we will most likely know where we can park and unload without getting in the way. We’ll likely already know the staff at the venue which means we don’t need to disturb anyone whilst we’re setting up. And, we will most likely know the best place to set up to get the best out of the sound system!

5. Do you have any live performance footage?

If you want to understand how a Wedding DJ performs, it’s always best to ask for some live footage. This can either be a video, or a CD of tracks to help you decide if their style is right for your day.

6. Can we submit a “DO NOT PLAY” list?

As a DJ, I highly encourage your guests to request their favourite songs throughout the night. But, if there are some songs out there that you simply cannot abide, it’s best to ask your Wedding DJ candidates if they will accept a do not play list. Now, at this point, you’re thinning down the herd to a few last DJ’s that fit the criteria for your perfect day. So, make sure that you ask everything that could potentially affect how your day runs. Such as:

7. How much does it cost to hire you for my wedding day?

This question isn’t a simple one for DJ’s to answer. There are many factors involved when providing a quote for a wedding. If you’re on a budget price will certainly affect who you can afford to hire. I recently uploaded a blog on this, you can read all about it here

8. How much do you charge for overtime?

Say your guests are having an absolutely cracking time and you don’t want the party to end. What happens if your DJ can’t stay afterwards or they charge more than you expected? Cover yourself by asking early if you think there will be a chance that you’ll be dancing to the wee hours.

9. Are you insured?

This should be a very important question to ask your Wedding DJ. If the worst should ever happen and something goes wrong with your DJ on your big day, an insured Wedding DJ is covered.

10. Can you provide mics for the ceremony?

If you’ve got a large number of guests, you’ll want everyone to be able to hear the ceremony even from right at the back. To do this, you might need some wireless mics, it’s worth asking your DJ so that you don’t have to source these elsewhere! Now, with all that in mind, there are probably a hundred other questions that you have sitting in the back of your mind. If you have, contact me and I’d be happy to answer any questions to help put your mind at ease when booking me for your big day!

How much does it cost to hire a wedding DJ in Northamptonshire?

As a Wedding DJ in Northamptonshire, the most common question I am always asked is:

“What do you charge?”

“How much will it cost for you to DJ at my wedding?”

I’d love to be able to provide an off the cuff quote, but there are too many variables. The services I provide are bespoke so very different to those provided by a huge majority of DJs in the UK.  Simply giving you a quote without a proper explanation of what’s included in that fee is not very helpful.

There are several factors that can affect the price. Including; the distance to your wedding venue, the time of year and the hours required for me to DJ at your wedding.

I pride myself on ensuring that my prices are fair and competitive. It’s very rare that I am challenged on price. Yet, there was one time that a customer challenged me. They decided to go elsewhere as they had a friend who offered to DJ instead for a cheaper price.

Hire a Wedding DJ in Northamptonshire

Unfortunately this customer’s ‘friend’ let them down at the last minute. I had a very desperate bride-to-be on the phone, begging to book me to DJ for her wedding. It was now only a few weeks before her special day. Luckily I still had availability, however if I hadn’t, things could have been a lot worse for her.

My advice here is to not try and save on budget with your entertainment. Booking a wedding DJ in Northamptonshire should be the most important part of your wedding. This will ensure that you have the best experience for your dream wedding.

Don’t try to cut corners and save money on your Wedding Disco. You could end up with cowboy DJ with poor experience and poor quality equipment. No one wants an empty dance floor at their wedding party. This is going to be the most important day of your life.

I always recommend you do your research and go with experience over price.

So, in a nutshell, it is not easy to properly explain what I do using the written word on an email, or even on a telephone call. It is far better in a face to face meeting over coffee. This might be at your home, the venue itself or maybe a coffee shop near to you or partners office?

How far in advance should you book your wedding DJ?

Home » Blog

A response to the question about how early the booking should be made. A question people sometimes ask me is how far in advance how far in advance to book a wedding DJ?

This is another one of those answers like how long is a piece of string. It really depends on when the wedding is if the wedding is during the week for example on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night then availability is probably going to be better. If it’s off-season again availability will be better. Off-season are months like January February March and November. Whereas if it’s a Saturday in June July August you need to book quite far in advance. I already have bookings for 2020 never mind about the summer of 2019 this video has been recorded in June 19.

So the answer really depends. If it’s a Saturday mid-season preferably in as far in advance as possible. Most people are booking me between nine and 18 months in advance. If it’s as I said a Thursday or even maybe a Sunday all of the season then availability will be much higher.

Even if you send me an email and I’m not available on your date I know a number of excellent DJs that I can put you in touch with.

Should you need any further information, please do not heistate to contact me.

Questions you should ask your prospective DJ

Home » Blog

For most weddings entertainment is a big factor as it is what the guests will remember from the wedding in years to come. If you think back to weddings you’ve attended from years gone by you might not remember the cake from that wedding 5 years ago, or the favours from the wedding 7 years ago, but it’s quite likely that you’ll remember whether you had a good time from every wedding you’ve attended and much of that is down to what entertainment they had.

Unless you’re a fan of taking big chances you’re going to want some reassurance that the entertainer you book is going to deliver what you want, and the only way to do this is by meeting them in person.

Even if you were at a wedding a few years ago where there was a great band or DJ you should still meet with them for many reasons. Some of which are covered further in this article.

The basics

Are you definitely available on our date?
In case other couples have enquired but not yet confirmed. Do you care about my wedding? (And watch for their reaction)

Have you ever been at a wedding where the DJ looked totally disinterested?
For some this is nothing but a job and they have no passion for it.

Is that the type of DJ you want performing for you?

Will the person you meet guarantee that they will be the person that arrives on the wedding day?
There are some people that are great salesmen, and they’ll sell you the dream about how great your wedding will be and lead you to assume that they will be the DJ on the day, and then when it comes to it somebody completely different turns up, who you know nothing about. This can make many a bride a little uncomfortable and worried.

Do they have creative ideas to make the wedding unique and fun?
Do you want somebody to simply turn up and play music? Or are you looking for someone to be more involved in your day and to help with background music for the drinks reception, wedding breakfast, help with introductions etc.? They may have some ideas to make your wedding a little different to all the others you’ve attended.

Do they have the required insurance?

(PLI- Public Liability Insurance & PAT Certificate – Portable Appliance Test), and also a member of one of the trade associations, such as NADJ (National Association of DJs) or SEDA (South-East DJ Association) –Many venues require this from the DJ before they are allowed to perform at the venue. Being a member of a DJ association isn’t a guarantee of being a great DJ but at least it shows they take the job seriously and are trying to develop themselves.
It will also mean they’ll have the required insurance.

Do they have testimonials

and/or client evaluations of their service and is it possible to contact some former clients? If the DJ has told you they have x number of years experience in DJing at weddings and yet can’t show any genuine testimonials that could be cause for concern?

Will they meet with you to discuss your day in detail?
This is absolutely imperative, to get to know their personality so you can assess whether you want that person interacting with the people closest to you. It also allows you to ask a number of these questions to gain some reassurance. The entertainment plays a major part in the success of the day, it’s essential to ensure you are comfortable with your choice of DJ and that you’re comfortable he has the necessary experience, music knowledge and music collection and that he’s willing to play the music YOU want, rather than what he likes.

What does the DJ think is more important – professional equipment or unique talent?
If they answer “professional equipment” it is very unlikely they have much creativity and a greater chance that you’re going to receive the same wedding they deliver every week to every client they work for.

Do they have back-up equipment in case anything should malfunction on the night?
If they do not confidently answer, “yes” to this question it could be cause for concern.

Will they visit your venue before the day itself?

Some venues have extremely difficult access. Some may have a lot of stairs. Others require very long leads to connect to the power and so on. If your DJ doesn’t know any of this, in some cases they could be severely delayed.

Will they provide a booking form that clearly lists the services they’ll provide as well as all the other relevant details such as the fee, venue details, contact numbers etc.?
Having a signed document with these details provides reassurance that they have the correct details.

Will they allow you to submit a request list of your favourite songs?
And just as importantly, a list of the songs you definitely do not want to hear! This is an item that should definitely be discussed so that you are confident that the DJ knows what you both like and dislike and to give you some reassurance that they’re not going to try to “educate” with their music taste all night. Also check that he’ll take requests from your guests on the night?

Do NOT ask the DJ if it is ok to watch them perform at another wedding! You would most likely not like your DJ bringing in strangers to your wedding so it is not fair to expect to intrude on somebody else’s wedding.

Wedding First Dance

As a wedding DJ who preformed at more than 2000 weddings I know that Your First dance is a very special moment that you want to share with your closest friends and family.  Over the years I’ve played a huge number of different songs at the weddings that I’ve performed at, and seen a huge variation in the way couples have danced to the songs as well.

In recent years I have to say Ed Sheeran has become very popular. Approx 95% of first dances are done off the cuff and the rest are dance routines.

As a wedding DJ with lots of experience I am aware that Your first dance is a magical moment, and music is only one part of the moment you will remember for the rest of you lives.

Lighting must be perfect. That is why I would organize the room as part of the preparation for the dance, and I would talk to the photographer about the lighting. Besides the music I would make sure that the light show goes along with your choice of music.

When everything is arranged properly, you are ready to have a perfect first dance, the only kind you deserve.

If you are looking for a wedding DJ in Northamptonshire, Wedding DJ in Bedfordshire, Wedding DJ in Cambridgeshire or a wedding DJ in Buckinghamshire feel free to contact me.
